Is Bulgaria safe for tourists in 2026? Scams, taxis, tap water

Yes: Bulgaria is generally safe, with no UK or German travel warning (as of 2026-10). The risks are taxis, pickpockets, padded club bills and sea currents.

Published:

Yes, Bulgaria is generally a safe country for tourists, and Varna is a relaxed seaside city. As of October 2026, neither the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) nor Germany’s Auswärtiges Amt advises against travel; the German office calls the domestic situation stable. The real risks are small and avoidable: rigged taxis, pickpockets, padded nightlife bills and strong sea currents.

What do official travel advisories say about Bulgaria?

The FCDO reminds visitors that “no travel can be guaranteed safe”, but there is no warning against any part of the country. Both governments mention the global terrorism threat; the FCDO notes Bulgaria has no recent history of attacks. Their concrete warnings are about crime and scams:

  • Pickpockets at airports, stations, on buses and trains. The FCDO says thefts on the Nessebar–Sunny Beach bus have increased.
  • Hotel burglaries in Sunny Beach: lock windows and balcony doors and use the safe.
  • “Gentlemen’s clubs” in Sofia, Bansko, Borovets and Sunny Beach have overcharged guests by hundreds of pounds and threatened those who refused to pay. Keep your card in sight and never re-enter your PIN.
  • Cars: thefts from unlocked cars at petrol stations, and tricks such as a staged flat tyre.
  • Golden Sands: the Auswärtiges Amt reports private hotel doctors charging very high fees; ask the price first.

How do I take a taxi safely?

Taxi trouble is the most common complaint. At Sofia airport, use the official taxi desk in arrivals. In Sunny Beach the FCDO reports robberies and threats by drivers, so take a taxi your hotel or tour operator recommends. Everywhere, avoid cars waiting outside hotels, check the price sticker on the window and make sure the meter is running; the Auswärtiges Amt warns meters can be manipulated. Bolt’s Bulgarian page lists scooters, e-bikes and food delivery, not car rides, so book a licensed company by phone or app. More in our first-timer tips.

Can you drink the tap water in Varna?

Yes. Varna’s water utility (ВиК Варна) tests more than 1,500 samples a year under a programme agreed with the regional health inspectorate and rates drinking water across Varna province as “very good”. Bottled mineral water is cheap and many locals prefer its taste, but you do not need it for safety.

What about the sea and summer wildfires?

The Black Sea is the bigger physical risk. The Auswärtiges Amt warns of dangerous undercurrents even close to the shore, with occasional fatal accidents. Swim at beaches with lifeguards and obey flags and signs. The FCDO adds that Bulgaria is on regular wildfire alert in summer and early autumn. Our beach guide lists guarded beaches.

Does the Black Sea drone news affect tourists?

On 6 October 2026, drones struck two cargo ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, about 130 km offshore; one sank and injured sailors were flown to Varna (our report). Since then Bulgaria and Romania have pushed a maritime security hub in Varna. As of 2026-10, neither the FCDO nor the Auswärtiges Amt mentions the Black Sea in its advice or warns against coastal travel. Follow local news, but there is no reason to cancel a beach holiday.

How to plan a safe trip

  • Save 112: police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone.
  • Carry ID (a copy of your passport page is accepted, says the FCDO); drugs and public drunkenness are punished harshly.
  • Keep valuables in the hotel safe, not on the beach.
  • Women and solo travellers: no specific official warning; the FCDO notes some ethnic-minority visitors have faced harassment or, rarely, attacks, and that incidents rise around demonstrations.
  • Read practical basics, Sunny Beach and Nessebar and entry rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bulgaria safe for women travelling alone?

Generally yes. Neither the UK nor the German official advice has a women-specific warning. Use normal city sense: licensed taxis at night, lit streets, and keep an eye on your drink and bag.

Is Sunny Beach safe?

Mostly, but it is where official warnings concentrate: taxi drivers robbing or threatening passengers, hotel burglaries, thefts on the Nessebar bus and overcharging in 'gentlemen's clubs'. Use a taxi recommended by your hotel.

Can you drink tap water in Varna?

Yes. Varna's water utility runs a monitoring programme agreed with the regional health inspectorate and rates drinking-water quality in the region as very good. Many locals still buy bottled mineral water for taste.

Is it safe to visit Varna after the Black Sea drone attacks?

As of 2026-10, neither the UK nor Germany advises against travel. The October strikes hit cargo ships far offshore, about 130 km from the coast, not beaches or the city.
