Golden Sands or Sunny Beach: which is better?
Golden Sands is smaller and greener, backed by the 1,300-hectare Golden Sands Nature Park. Sunny Beach is a long wall of hotels that merges into Nessebar and draws a younger, louder crowd. If you land in Varna, Golden Sands saves you a two-hour transfer. Read more in our guide to Golden Sands and St Constantine.
Is Albena better for families?
Usually, yes. The water stays at about 1.6 m or less for 100–150 m out, a free eco shuttle and electric buses run inside the resort, and Aquamania water park (open 15 June–15 September in 2026) charges €19–28 for a day ticket over 120 cm and €11–16 for children of 91–120 cm; children up to 90 cm go in free. See Albena from Varna for the trip itself.
Is Sunny Beach safe?
Mostly, but stay alert. As of October 2026 the UK Foreign Office warns about pickpockets and hotel-room burglaries in Sunny Beach, robberies and threats by some taxi drivers, and overcharging in gentlemen’s clubs. Book taxis through your hotel and leave valuables off the beach.
How do you get there by bus from Varna?
Buses to all three resorts leave Varna central bus station; fares and journey times are in the table above. For timetables and connections, see Albena from Varna and Varna to Nessebar and Sunny Beach.

The list 7
✨ Picked for the current time and weather in Varna
Golden Sands✨ Good right now
The big resort 17 km north of Varna, with lively bars and clubs on the main strip and the protected Golden Sands Nature Park forest right behind the hotels. It is the quickest of the big three to reach from Varna Airport and the city, and its beach holds a Blue Flag for 2026.
Best for: Groups of friends, couples who want nightlife plus nature, short trips from Varna
Sunny Beach✨ Good right now
Bulgaria's largest beach resort, a long strip of hotels on a wide bay that runs into Nessebar. It is the country's best-known party destination, and it has three Blue Flag beaches in 2026. It sits in Burgas province, so fly into Burgas, not Varna.
Best for: Young groups, clubbing, flights into Burgas
Albena✨ Good right now
A self-contained resort owned and run by one company, with about 5–6 km of fine sand and shallow water close to the shore. The Aquamania water park, children's animation and a free electric shuttle make it the family pick, and its beach is Blue Flag in 2026.
Best for: Families with small children, calm holidays, all-inclusive stays
St Constantine and Helena✨ Good right now
Bulgaria's oldest resort, 8 km from central Varna, set in woodland with warm mineral springs at 40–60 °C feeding its spa hotels. Quieter than Golden Sands and close enough to the city for dinner in Varna. Its beaches are not on the 2026 Blue Flag list.
Best for: Spa breaks, older travellers, staying near the city
Kranevo✨ Good right now
A village next to Albena, half an hour's walk along the beach, with noticeably lower prices than the neighbouring resorts. Its North and Central beaches both have a Blue Flag for 2026. Ideal if you want Albena's sea without Albena's prices.
Best for: Budget travellers, families who self-cater, Romanian drivers
Obzor✨ Good right now
A small town halfway between Varna and Burgas with one of the longest unbroken beaches on the coast, over 6 km. It is calmer than Sunny Beach, has a Blue Flag central beach in 2026 and the Kaleto eco trail with a small waterfall.
Best for: Long quiet beach walks, couples, mid-budget stays
Nessebar Old Town✨ Good right now
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983 on a rocky peninsula just south of Sunny Beach, full of medieval churches and cobbled lanes. Not a beach base in itself, but the best half-day out from Sunny Beach, and worth seeing even outside the season.
Best for: History, sunset walks, a break from the beach
💬 What people say
Summarised from public reviews, forums and social posts — paraphrased themes, not individual quotes.

Wikivoyage – Sunny Beach ↗The common advice is that taxis can be overpriced, so arrange your airport transfer in advance or ask your hotel to send a car.
Wikivoyage – Bulgarian Black Sea Coast ↗Albena is described as a peaceful area that has escaped overbuilding because a single company owns the whole resort.
Wikivoyage – Bulgarian Black Sea Coast ↗Golden Sands and St Constantine are seen as one continuous built-up strip just outside Varna, the northern counterpart of Sunny Beach.
Wikivoyage – Nesebar ↗Visitors find the old town picturesque, but warn about restaurant touts, persistent sellers and souvenir stalls; a polite but firm no usually works.
Albena – Aquamania ↗Albena's water park is ranked eighth in Europe on Tripadvisor, according to the resort, which is a big reason families choose Albena.
