Generally yes, but keep your bag closed and in front of you. The UK Foreign Office warns that thieves target tourists in Sunny Beach and that thefts on the bus between Nessebar and Sunny Beach have increased.

What is there to see in Nessebar Old Town?

The old town sits on a small peninsula joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus with a wooden windmill. Thracians fortified it in the 8th century BC and Greeks from Megara settled it as Messambria. Highlights:

  • Fortification walls and the old town gate by the isthmus.
  • St Stephen Church, with more than 1,000 painted figures from 1599.
  • Christ Pantokrator and the ruined St Sophia basilica (the Old Bishopric).
  • Archaeological Museum, with the story of ancient Messambria.

As of 2026, single tickets cost €2.56–4.60; a combined ticket for the museum, St Stephen and one more site is €9.71. In the museum’s published table, from mid-October only the Archaeological Museum and St Stephen keep regular hours (09:00–17:00).

How much time do I need, and can I add Pomorie or Burgas?

Allow 3–4 hours in Nessebar, plus about 4 hours on buses (timetable). Pomorie, on the same Varna–Burgas line, has a salt lake, a Salt Museum and a Roman-era Thracian tomb. You can also take a loop: Varna to Burgas, then back north via Pomorie, Sunny Beach and Nessebar on the same line.

Bus or guided tour?

The bus to Sunny Beach costs from about €9.50 each way and lets you set your own pace. A guided tour from Varna saves you the timetable and adds a guide, but costs more; compare offers before you book. Driving? See getting to Varna.
