How did we rank these places?

How should I plan a trip around Bulgaria from Varna?
- One free day: the Madara Rider and Shumen, or Nessebar by bus.
- A weekend: Veliko Tarnovo with a night in town, or Ruse and the Danube.
- Three to four days: take the night train to Sofia, do Rila Monastery as a day trip and come back via Plovdiv.
- A road trip: Varna – Veliko Tarnovo – Buzludzha – Kazanlak – Plovdiv – Sofia, then fly back to Varna.
Without a car, stick to places on the train or bus lines. Buzludzha and the Seven Rila Lakes are much easier by car or with a tour, and Rila Monastery has very limited public transport. In winter, mountain roads may need chains, and the lakes are frozen from October to June. Book the Varna–Sofia night train early in summer: see our Varna to Sofia guide and the Rila Monastery and Seven Lakes guide. For a day-by-day route, see our Bulgaria itinerary from Varna.
Where to go if you are coming from Romania or Turkey?
Romanian visitors arriving over the Danube Bridge pass Ruse and can detour to Veliko Tarnovo (about 107 km by road, OSRM); Balchik, Queen Marie’s palace on the coast, is about 50 km north of Varna (Visit Varna). Visitors interested in Ottoman heritage will like Ruse, Shumen with Tombul Mosque, the largest mosque in Bulgaria, and Kardzhali in the Rhodopes, reached from Varna by a daily 11:00 bus (as of 2026-10, Varna bus station).
