Balchik Palace and Botanical Garden: Queen Marie's seaside retreat
Balchik Palace, Queen Marie of Romania's 1920s–30s seaside retreat, is about 50 km from Varna. Tickets: €10 palace plus €10 garden (Oct 2026).
Balchik Palace is the seaside summer retreat that Queen Marie of Romania built from 1924, when this coast belonged to Romania, and today it shares its terraced grounds with Sofia University’s Botanical Garden. It lies on the Balchik seafront, about 50 km north-east of Varna. As of October 2026 you pay €10 for the palace and €10 for the garden (Visit Varna), and you should allow two to three hours.
Who built Balchik Palace and why?
Southern Dobruja, with Balchik, was Romanian from 1913 until the Craiova agreement of 7 September 1940 returned it to Bulgaria. Queen Marie fell for the white cliffs and in the mid-1920s began building her “Quiet Nest” (Tenha Yuvah), a three-storey villa by Italian architects with a minaret-like tower. The complex has no grand palace. It is a group of small stone villas, terraces, fountains, old watermills and paths, built in a mix of Byzantine, Oriental and Balkan styles that reflects the Queen’s belief in the unity of religions.
What should you not miss?
- The Quiet Nest: the Queen’s villa above the water.
- The Stone Throne: a marble throne made in Florence where Marie sat to watch the sea.
- Stella Maris chapel: built in 1929 as a copy of a 15th-century church she saw in Cyprus. After her death in 1938 her heart was kept here in a golden casket. It left Balchik in 1940 and, since 2015, rests at Pelișor Castle in Sinaia.
- The cactus garden: the Botanical Garden’s outdoor collection of large cacti, about 1,000 m², is often described as the second-largest in Europe after Monaco’s.
How much are tickets, and is there one combined ticket?
As of 2026-10 the official palace site lists adults at €10, pensioners and students up to 25 at €3.60, children 6–18 at €3 and a family ticket at €18. Children under 6 go in free. Visit Varna lists the Botanical Garden at €10 for adults (undated). In December 2025 BTA reported that a single ticket for both sites was planned for 2026, but the palace site still says you buy the garden ticket separately, so budget for two tickets.
When is it open?
The complex is open every day all year. From 26 October to March the hours are 08:30–17:00. In April they are 08:30–19:00, from May to August 08:00–20:00, in September 08:00–19:00 and from 1 to 25 October 08:30–18:00. Spring and early summer bring the best flowers, and weekday mornings are quieter in July and August.
How do you get there from Varna?
- By bus: Minibus OOD runs from Varna Bus Station (sector 5) at 08:30, 10:30 and 14:30, and the trip takes about 50 minutes (as of 2026-10). The 08:30 runs Monday to Saturday. The Kavarna bus at 09:30 (sector 6) and the Shabla buses at 12:30, 15:00 and 18:40 (plus 08:50 on weekdays, sector 5) also stop in Balchik. Ask the driver about return times.

How to plan your day
Take the 08:30 or 10:30 bus, spend the morning in the palace and the afternoon in the garden, and eat in Balchik. With a car, add Cape Kaliakra, a headland with medieval fortress ruins about 12 km east of Kavarna. Wine lovers can ask at the complex about tastings: in 2022 BTA reported a tasting room in the Prince Nicholas villa pouring wines from the Queen’s Winery House. On the way back, stop at the resorts in our Golden Sands and St Constantine guide.
Our guide to Cape Kaliakra and the north coast covers Kaliakra, the Tyulenovo rock arch and the wild beaches up to Durankulak.
