Trains almost always need a change at Gorna Oryahovitsa and take 4–7 hours (BDZ). What should I see in Veliko Tarnovo?

Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, and Tsarevets was its fortress from 1185 to 1393. Go early, when the hill is quiet. Then walk down through the old town, along picturesque Gurko Street, to Samovodska charshia for crafts, and cross the Yantra to the Asenevtsi Monument for the classic view. Arbanasi, 4 km away (Wikipedia), has the frescoed Church of the Nativity and the Konstantsalieva House.

The Sound and Light show (lasers, music and bells over the fortress) has run since 1985, but only on selected evenings. Confirm the date with the organisers or the local tourist information centre before planning around it.

Is a day trip from Varna enough?

A day trip works if you take an early bus and return on an evening one: that covers Tsarevets, the old town and the crafts street. Stay one night if you also want Arbanasi, the Transfiguration Monastery or a chance at the Sound and Light show. Emen Canyon only makes sense with a car.

Best time: spring and autumn are ideal for walking the steep streets. Summer is hot, and in winter the fortress closes at 17:00, so start early.

Coming from Romania?

From Giurgiu, cross the Danube Bridge to Ruse; Veliko Tarnovo is about 107 km south by road. Bulgaria and Romania have been full Schengen members since 1 January 2025, so there are no routine passport checks, but carry ID and buy the Bulgarian e-vignette. More in driving to Varna.

How to plan it

  • Short on time: early bus, Tsarevets, old town, evening bus back.
  • Culture lover: overnight, add Arbanasi and the Transfiguration Monastery.
  • With a car: add Emen Canyon, or continue to Ruse and Romania.
