Rila Monastery and the Seven Rila Lakes from Varna: a realistic plan

Rila Monastery and the Seven Rila Lakes lie beyond Sofia, far from Varna: plan 2–3 days, not a day trip. Hours, dress code, chairlift, season.

Published:

Rila Monastery and the Seven Rila Lakes are Bulgaria’s two most-searched mountain sights, but from Varna they are not a day trip: both lie on the far side of the country, in the south-west beyond Sofia. Plan 2–3 days, travel to Sofia overnight by train or by plane, and do each one as a day trip from the capital. The monastery is worth it in any season; the lakes are a summer hike, roughly July to September.

How do you get from Varna to Rila?

  • Night train: as of 2026-10 BDZ’s ICF 2626 with sleeping cars leaves Varna at 21:40 and reaches Sofia at 05:45; back, ICF 2627 leaves Sofia at 23:00 and arrives in Varna at 06:50. In summer 2026 an extra night train (Varna 21:40 – Sofia 06:07) also ran, but it is not in the October timetable. Check times and fares on bdz.bg.
  • Flight: Bulgaria Air flies Varna–Sofia, the fastest option if booked early.
  • Car: a full day of driving each way. Read our driving to Varna tips first.

From Sofia, Rila Monastery is 117 km south (Wikipedia) (about two hours by car), and Panichishte, the base for the lakes, is closer. Day tours and shuttles leave central Sofia in the morning; one public bus a day goes to the monastery from Ovcha Kupel bus station, with a limited return.

What should you know before visiting Rila Monastery?

The monastery was founded in the 10th century around the hermit St John of Rila, rebuilt after a fire in 1833 and listed by UNESCO in 1983. Walking into the courtyard and the main church is free. As of 2026-10 the official site lists the museums as open daily 8:30–16:30 (until 19:30 from 1 June to 30 September), a combined museum ticket at €12 and a 50-minute English tour at €15. Parking costs a small fee.

Dress code: no shorts, short skirts or sleeveless tops; men remove hats in the church. Photos and videos are not allowed inside the church or museums, and large backpacks stay outside the church. See also our Bulgarian customs and etiquette guide.

How do the Seven Rila Lakes and the chairlift work?

The seven glacial lakes sit at 2,095–2,535 m in Rila National Park (Wikipedia), and entry is free. Most people take the two-seat chairlift from the Pionerska hut area above Panichishte to the Rila Lakes hut (about 20 minutes). 2026 travel guides such as The Better Vacation give Tuesday–Sunday 9:00–16:30 (Monday from midday), about €16 return, cash only. The official site, rilskiezera.bg, was down when we checked, so treat these figures as unconfirmed. From the top station the loop takes 3–6 hours depending on pace; without the lift, add about 4 hours.

Safety: this is a high-mountain trail. Wear proper shoes (not sandals), carry a waterproof layer and a warm layer, start early and turn back if storms build. In an emergency call 112.

When should you go, and when not?

  • July–September: best for the lakes; go on a weekday, as summer weekends are very crowded.
  • October–June: the lift usually does not run in October, and the lakes are often frozen or snowbound until early summer. Visit only the monastery.
  • Rainy day: the monastery and its museums still work; the lakes do not.

How to plan it

  1. Night train or flight Varna → Sofia.
  2. Day 1: Rila Monastery by tour or rental car; sleep in Sofia.
  3. Day 2 (summer only): Seven Rila Lakes, starting early; night train back to Varna.
