Varna to Albena by bus: beach, Aquamania and who the resort suits
Albena is a family beach resort 30 km north of Varna. Kranevo buses leave Varna every 2 hours; only one daily bus stops in Albena itself.
Albena is a planned beach resort about 30 km north of Varna (Wikipedia), in Dobrich Province, built around a wide, shallow, Blue Flag beach that makes it one of the easiest places on the coast for families with small children. From Varna you can reach it by bus via neighbouring Kranevo in under an hour, but only one daily bus actually stops in Albena itself. The resort lives from June to September; outside the season most of it is closed.
What is Albena like?
Albena opened in 1967 on an empty stretch of coast and is still run as one resort, with hotels set among green areas behind a 5 km beach. The sand is fine, the beach is about 150 m wide and the water stays shallow (no deeper than about 1.6 m) for the first 100–150 m (Wikipedia). The beach again holds the Blue Flag for 2026. A free eco shuttle and electric buses link the hotels and the beach.
How do I get from Varna to Albena by bus?
All buses leave from Varna Bus Station (Avtogara, 158b Vladislav Varnenchik Blvd). As of October 2026 the station lists:
- Varna–Kranevo (Varna Bus 2000), sector 5: 07:30, 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 15:30, 17:30 and 19:30, about 48 minutes. Kranevo is the next village to the south, less than half an hour’s walk along the beach (Wikipedia).
- Varna–Balchik minibuses (Minibus OOD), sector 5: 08:30, 10:30 and 14:30, about 50 minutes to Balchik, with a stop in Kranevo.
- Varna–Kavarna (Rumi-Ruschev), sector 6 at 09:30: the only departure listed with a stop in Albena itself.
From Kranevo you can walk along the beach or take a taxi. Timetables change between seasons, so check the station’s departures page or ask at the ticket desk the day before.
How do I get from Varna Airport to Albena?
The resort’s website gives the distance as about 40 km. There is no direct public bus, so most people take a taxi or a transfer booked in advance. Agree the price before you set off. Drivers pay to enter and park in Albena: the Avtogara car park at the entrance cost €4 per 24 hours from 7 June to 31 October 2026 (Albena parking), and leaving and coming back means paying again.
Is Aquamania worth it?
Aquamania is the resort’s water park, built for 1,000 visitors on about 3 ha, with ProSlide rides such as Tornado and a four-lane racer, plus a lazy river and a children’s zone. The 2026 season ran 15 June–15 September, 10:00–18:00. In July and August a full-day ticket for anyone over 120 cm was €27 on weekdays and €28 at weekends; children 91–120 cm paid €14–16, and children up to 90 cm entered free (Albena). Afternoon tickets after 14:00 are cheaper. Guests of a few resort hotels on all-inclusive packages get free entry. 2027 dates and prices have not been announced yet.
Albena or Kranevo?
Kranevo shares the same long beach, and its North and Central beaches also hold the Blue Flag for 2026. It is a real village with guesthouses, small restaurants and a more local feel. Albena is more organised: one operator, landscaped grounds, sports facilities and the water park. Budget travellers and those arriving by bus often stay in Kranevo; families wanting everything on site usually choose Albena.
Who does Albena suit, and when should I go?
Albena suits families with young children, swimmers who prefer gentle water and anyone who wants a quiet, green resort rather than nightlife. For a day trip from Varna, take a morning bus, spend most of the day on the beach or in Aquamania, and add a walk to the Baltata reserve, a 2 km² riverside ash forest just behind the beach (Albena). Go between mid-June and early September: from October to May most hotels, restaurants and the water park are closed, apart from a few hotels running autumn and New Year offers.
For other resorts north of the city, see Golden Sands and St Constantine and Helena, and plan your season with when to visit Varna. To weigh it against the other big resorts, see Golden Sands vs Sunny Beach vs Albena.
Further north, past Balchik and Kavarna, the coast turns wild: see Cape Kaliakra and the north coast.
