How do I get from Varna to the ski resorts?
- By car: the most practical option. Winter tyres and chains matter on the last mountain stretch.
- Fly to Sofia: Bulgaria Air flies Varna–Sofia. From Sofia it is about 70 km to Borovets and 160 km to Bansko (OSRM) by transfer or bus.
- Train: possible to Sofia, then a bus; Bansko also has a narrow-gauge line from Septemvri, which is scenic but slow.
Is skiing in Bulgaria cheap?
Still good value, but no longer a bargain. The UK Post Office Ski Report 2026 (BTA) ranked Borovets 2nd and Bansko 4th of 32 European resorts for value, yet holiday costs rose by 18.6% in Borovets and 23.3% in Bansko in a year. Prices have been in euros since January 2026. Borovets sells official six-day EPIC All-In packages (pass, rental and group lessons) for €474 for skiers and €432 for snowboarders in 2026/27 (Borovets). Book early: these prices are promotional and limited.
Notes for Turkish skiers
Pamporovo is about 500 km by road from Istanbul, Borovets about 535 km and Bansko about 570 km (OSRM). Bulgaria has been a full Schengen member since January 2025, so Turkish passport holders generally need a Schengen visa (check the current rules before booking), and you should allow extra time at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing.
Notes for Romanian skiers (close to Bucharest)
With no border checks between Romania and Bulgaria since July 2025, Borovets is the closest big resort to Bucharest (about 415 km via Ruse), followed by Pamporovo (465 km) and Bansko (515 km, OSRM).
