For culture and calm, May, June and September–October are mild, with the city’s music and theatre festivals in full swing.

Which month is best for swimming?

Water temperatures for every month are on our sister site Varna Daily: sea temperature in Varna by month.

What is each season like?

Varna has three travel seasons: the beach months from June to September, the mild spring and autumn for culture, and a quiet winter. Air temperatures, rainfall and sunshine for every month are on our sister site Varna Daily: Varna weather by month.

Spring (April–May). Parks bloom, the Sea Garden fills with walkers and prices are lower. The sea is still too cold for most swimmers.

Summer (June–August). Beach season in the city and the resorts of St Constantine and Helena and Golden Sands. The Varna Summer theatre festival opens in June, the music festival begins in late June, and 15 August is Varna Day, the city’s holiday, which coincides with the feast of the Dormition, patron of the cathedral.

Autumn (September–October). Warm sea in early September, fewer crowds, and the closing concerts of the Varna Summer International Music Festival — in 2026 its 100th edition ran until 14 October.

Winter (November–March). A quiet, local season: museums, theatres, opera and cafés. Many resort hotels close, while the city stays lively thanks to its universities. For a warm break, see our guide to the thermal spa hotels near Varna. Late winter also has two local customs worth timing a trip around: Trifon Zarezan on 14 February and Baba Marta on 1 March.
