Which is the best route by car: Ruse or Vama Veche?
| Via Giurgiu–Ruse | Via Constanța – Vama Veche | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | about 265 km | about 370 km |
| Driving time | 4–5 h | about 5–5.5 h |
| Tolls | Danube Bridge fee (paid in euro) | A2 bridge toll at Fetești, no Danube bridge |
| Good for | the fastest trip | a seaside drive, stops in Balchik and the north coast |
Distances are from the OSRM route planner on OpenStreetMap data; real times depend on traffic and summer queues at the bridge. The Ruse route continues through Razgrad and Shumen to Varna. The coastal route crosses at Vama Veche – Durankulak, then follows the coast road south via Shabla, Kavarna and Balchik. The Danube Bridge fee changes from time to time, so check the current amount before you leave.
Do I need a vignette and a passport?
Yes to the vignette: cars need the Bulgarian e-vignette, linked to your number plate and bought at the official site web.bgtoll.bg. From 1 August 2026 it costs €5.30 for a day, €6.60 for a weekend and €10 for a week (BG TOLL). In Romania you also need a valid Romanian rovinietă until the border.
Romania and Bulgaria have been full Schengen members since 1 January 2025. Enhanced controls stayed on this border until 30 June 2025 and were abolished on 1 July 2025, so there are no routine passport checks now. Spot checks can still happen: carry your ID card or passport. More in our driving guide.
